One hour east

The coast that still launches rockets.

Cape Canaveral sits sixty miles from International Drive, and the drive ends with a Saturn V hanging over your head. Time it against a launch window and half of Titusville turns out on the causeway to watch the sky.

When the lagoon lights up

Summer nights glow on the lagoon.

From June to October the Indian River Lagoon fills with dinoflagellates, and every paddle stroke throws off blue-green light. Launch from Titusville or Cocoa Beach on a moonless night and the mullet leave comet trails under the hull.

Freshwater country

The springs run 72 degrees all year.

Rock Springs, Rainbow River, Silver Springs, Blue Spring. Central Florida sits on limestone that leaks clear water at one steady temperature, and the honest way to see it is through the bottom of a glass-hulled kayak.

After the parks close

Dinner comes with a plot.

Nowhere does the themed dinner show like Orlando: pirates in the rigging, a magician working the tables, a murder to solve between courses, a fire luau on the lawn. Take the early sitting and you still have an evening left.

Two hours north

St Augustine is older than the flag.

Coquina walls the Spanish poured out of crushed shell, a working lighthouse you can climb, and the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the country. The trolley loops it in an afternoon; the ghost tours take the same streets once the shops shut.

Choose your coast

Every direction is a different day.

Crystal River for the manatees. Clearwater for the dolphin boats. Cocoa Beach for the mangrove tunnels. St Augustine for coquina walls and ghost stories after dark.

Know your day

Twelve ways to spend a Florida afternoon.

Water takes up most of this list, because in Central Florida it should. Choose the shape of the afternoon and everything behind it already carries a price and a verdict.

Point the car somewhere

Two hours gets you a different Florida.

Point the car west for spring water and manatees, east for rockets and surf, north for Spanish stone, south for sawgrass and alligators. Every one of these is back in time for dinner on I-Drive.
